I appreciate the insight, but disagree on some level with some things. I have been using blogs, but more an a source of information for people. They do look at it at soak it up, but I am hoping they pick up the phone and call me with their question. I think, having read this, that I will start a blog that does encourage discussion, though… If it gets more people paying attention and engaging, then good idea. The extra content certainly can’t hurt.
I think that REALTOR® to REALTOR® chat is useful… I like the insight offered by others in the profession. And Active Rain ranks pretty high in searches, so those participants are going to dominate the google searches., and I think a lot of buyers and sellers are looking for a REALTOR® who who has an understanding of modern technology. Even if they are not participating, I think they will like to know that you are.

Provide the consumer with content and stayed focused. We are all constantly on the internet searching for the exact infomation tidbit. Make your blog be this tidbit in your local area.

Sometimes the internet can be too impersonal, so adding a personal and welcoming touch to everything wouldn’t hurt at all.

We referred to it (him first) as pressing the flesh. In reality, it’s meeting people and making relationships. So I would say your point about content and not just sitting behind the computer makes for a better life as well as a marketing strategy. AR comments make friends and referrals. Websites and blogs in the outside world are where I get most of my solid leads that are not referrals.

I would agree that opening up the conversation is one that is a challenge. I think that adding authors, as you have suggested, could be a great way to expose new opinions and get people to join the conversation. Looking beyond vendors into clients that may want to post on their neighborhood is a great way to get that conversation to the level that many can appreciate.
Let’s face it, even though it is in blog form, many just don’t want to talk t the “salesperson”. 🙂

Hey, for those among us Realtors who “get it,” these coming years are going to be great, because consumers get it and are using blogs and the Internet. I’m not thrilled to be in slow times in the market, but I am thrilled to be positioning myself for a powerful future on blogging platforms that reach consumers. I can testify that after practicing law for 20 years and now being a Realtor, this blogging stuff is some of the most fun . . . and most effective marketing I’ve done in my life. Thanks Al Gore for inventing the Internet.

Good article. I feel that everyone must here and there find themselves at times not knowing what to blog about…and this in an of itself takes time away from getting to work. The most important thing for me is to stay focused on content for your clients. So much in the blogosphere is commenting done between people in the business and not with potential customers. Most all of my comments as well on my blog come from the industry. Most of my clients tend to contact me directly and are not commenting. That is fine with me.
Stay focused on what can be helpful and useful to your clients…the main reason you are blogging in the first place.
